SCA Primer

The Society for Creative Anachronism was born in May of 1966 in Berkley, California (where else?). Originally a going-away theme party, the notion of living in the past (oh such the common notion at that) was such a joy to the partygoers that they repeated performance, and within months planned to expand, until it's formal establishment in January of 1968.

The goal of the SCA is that of education. Books are lovely and all, but they are such dry material when considering that "history" was once known as "ordinary life", so we strive to expand our knowledge with a more hands-on approach. Nearly any facet of Medieval life can be experienced in the SCA... or as the common saying goes; "Every part of Medieval life, except for the Plague", though even simulations of the Plague have been tried out by a few thrifty Medieval geeks here and there. We dress the part to historical accuracy, sport historically-documentable names, we play Medieval games, listen to Medieval music (played, of course, by a number of our Medieval musicians using Medieval instrruments), eat Medieval food, and even fight in Medieval tournaments, duels and wars (the biggest attraction to the SCA by far - the battles!).

The SCA is many thousands strong, and the "Known World" spans across the globe for the most part, covering the U.S. and Canada, Europe, Australia, South Africa, Japan, Korea, and even New Zealand, Greece and Guam. So if you're reading this there a very good chance that you have an SCA group not too far from you as we speak.
